Myths About Counselling

On the contrary, it actually takes a great deal of courage to seek help for problems that are too great to face alone. You are being proactive in taking care of your mental health, and I applaud you for that!

Counselling is not a quick fix to your problem. Counselling is a collaborative work between the client and the counsellor, where the counsellor and the client discuss the issues, goals and strategies together.

People with mental conditions do seek help from counsellors. Counsellors also help people with day-to-day problems, such as breakups or even stress at work. Why delay when you can nip the problem at its bud.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. In fact, they are interrelated.

FAQ

Counselling is where a client and a counsellor form a collaborative and therapeutic relationship to better understand the client’s behaviour, emotions and even the client’s world in order to equip clients with better skills and tools to face their life challenges.

Every once in a while we are faced with different challenges in life. It is perfectly normal to feel a different range of emotions. After all, humans are equipped with emotions for a reason. However, when these events or emotions start to interfere with your daily lives, you may want to seek professional help in order to assuage the weight you carry.

The frequency of the counselling sessions is mutually agreed upon by you and your counsellor. However, a regular weekly or biweekly session is recommended in order to build and strengthen the therapeutic relationship which strengthens and quickens the therapeutic process.

The short answer is that it varies from individual to individual. During the first session you will discuss the goal of your visit with your counselor. As you proceed with the sessions, you will discuss the progress that you’ve made with your counselor and decide if further counselling sessions are needed.

Counsellors follow the legal and ethics guidelines of LKM (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia). That means that the information that you shared in a counselling session will be kept confidential. However, there are exceptions. If there is a possible threat to the client or someone that the client mentioned, the counsellor is mandated to make a report about it.

We understand that sometimes you and the counsellor may not be a good fit, or you don’t feel comfortable talking about something with the counsellor. It is perfectly okay to make a request to change to a different counsellor. All arrangements will be made with the new counsellor after the request has been made.
